چکیده

We consider semilinear and quasilinear parabolic systems with a nonsmooth rate-independent and a viscous dissipation term in the limit of very slow loading rates, or equivalently with fixed loading and vanishing viscosity " > 0. Because for nonconvex energies the solutions will develop jumps, we consider the vanishing-viscosity limit for the graphs of the solutions in the extended state space in arclength parametrization. Here the choice of the viscosity norm for parametrization is crucial to keep the subdifferential structure of the problem. A crucial point in the analysis are new a priori estimates that are rate independent and that allow us to show that the total length of the graph remains bounded in the vanishing-viscosity limit. To derive these estimates we combine parabolic regularity estimates with ideas from rate-independent systems. Mathematics Subject Classification (2010): 35K55 (primary); 34E15 (secondary).

Optimal Rate of Convergence for Anisotropic Vanishing Viscosity Limit of a Scalar Balance Law

An open question in numerical analysis of multidimensional scalar conservation laws discretized on non-structured grids is the optimal rate of convergence. The main difficulty relies on a priori BV bounds which cannot be derived by opposition to the case of structured (cartesian) grids. In this paper we consider a related question for a corresponding continuous model, namely the vanishing visco...

Bv Solutions and Viscosity Approximations of Rate-independent Systems

In the nonconvex case solutions of rate-independent systems may develop jumps as a function of time. To model such jumps, we adopt the philosophy that rate independence should be considered as limit of systems with smaller and smaller viscosity. For the finite-dimensional case we study the vanishing-viscosity limit of doubly nonlinear equations given in terms of a differentiable energy function...

Laminar and Turbulent Dissipation in Shear Flow with Suction

The rate of viscous energy dissipation in a shear layer of incompressible Newtonian fluid with injection and suction is studied by means of exact solutions, nonlinear and linearized stability theory, and rigorous upper bounds. For large enough values of the injection angle a steady laminar flow is nonlinearly stable for all Reynolds numbers, while for small but nonzero angles the laminar flow i...

Energy dissipation in a shear layer with suction*

The rate of viscous energy dissipation in a shear layer of incompressible Newtonian fluid with injection and suction is studied by means of exact solutions, nonlinear and linearized stability theory, and rigorous upper bounds. The injection and suction rates are maintained constant and equal and this leads to solutions with constant throughput. For strong enough suction, expressed in terms of t...
